Plans To Scrap Three Controversial Florida Toll Roads Advances In The Legislature

An effort scrapping three new toll roads is moving in the Florida legislature. The proposal would also create new routes like connecting I-10 to U.S. 19 in Madison County.
A republican-backed effort to repeal the construction of three controversial toll roads is moving forward in the legislature. It would open the door for two other projects to commence.
The toll roads are currently planned to connect Citrus to Jefferson County, Collier to Polk County, and extend the Florida Turnpike northwest of the Suncoast Parkway. Each toll road had a task force to evaluate its need and impact.
The task force recognized that we may need investments. I think we all agreed we did need investments in the existing infrastructure, Leon County Commissioner Kristin Dozier says. She served on one of the task forces. ....

Can DeSantis Tackle Climate Change Without Admitting It's Real?

His Resilient Florida initiative addresses the impacts of the climate crisis but not the causes

When Ron DeSantis was running for governor in 2018, he found himself in a quandary. On the one hand, the effects of climate change in Florida increased flooding in coastal communities, more-active hurricane seasons, and the loss of wildlife habitat had become impossible to ignore. In the nation’s third-most-populous state, a 2018 poll found that 66 percent of voters considered climate change “a serious problem.”
But the Republican Party was deep in the grip of climate denialism (as has been the case for decades). DeSantis’s predecessor, Governor Rick Scott, had forbidden state employees from even using the term climate change and ordered them to refer to sea level rise as “nuisance flooding,” an absurdity that did not escape the attention of the nation’s comedians.  ....

Members of the Tampa Bay Climate Alliance say that they’re disappointed by Tampa City Councilman Joe Citro’s decision to withdraw his resolution to have the city of Tampa set a goal of transitioning to a 100-percent clean energy portfolio by 2030.
But they’re equally alarmed by a preemption bill recently filed in the state Legislature that could restrict every municipality in Florida from creating resolutions to set clean energy goals in the future. ....

Lawsuit Challenges Trump EPA’s Approval of Radioactive Roads
Phosphogypsum Use in Roadbuilding Previously Prohibited Due to Risks of Cancer, Genetic Damage
WASHINGTON Environmental, public health and union groups sued the Environmental Protection Agency today for approving the use of radioactive phosphogypsum in roads. The groups also petitioned the agency to reconsider its Oct. 20 approval.
The EPA has long prohibited use of phosphogypsum in roads because it contains uranium and radium that produce radionuclides linked to higher risks of cancer and genetic damage. ....
