Utah elected officials announced Thursday the state is a part of a $26 billion agreement to help fight the opioid crisis. The national settlement is with the country’s three largest pharmaceutical distributors and Johnson & Johnson. Utah will get about 1.2% of the money which is more than $309 million. It’ll be paid out over the next 18 years. Attorney General Sean Reyes called this a long overdue reckoning. Gov. Spencer Cox said he plans on working with the state Legislature to determine how to best spend the funds. ....

WEST VALLEY CITY Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill ruled Thursday that a West Valley police officer was legally justified when he shot and killed a man who managed to grab ahold of another officer s gun while handcuffed and in custody in a small room in the basement of West Valley City Hall.
But Gill also said the shooting of Michael Chad Breinholt could have been avoided.
If you re asking me to take off my district attorney hat, I can take it off. And do I feel morally comfortable in the way this ended up here, that there were other ways this could have been averted? Yes, the district attorney said at a press conference announcing his decision. As a civilian, do I think this death could have been averted? Yes. ....
