Do we really have to mankey about? SECTIONS Last Updated: Apr 23, 2021, 09:00 AM IST Share iStock Unlike Lewis Carroll’s half-lion, half-eagle gryphon, or Sukumar Ray’s hansjaru (duck+porcupine=duckupine), bokkochhop (stork+tortoise=stortoise) and other amalgams such as the half-giraffe, half-grasshopper and half-cow, half-rooster, the birth of the ‘mankey’ may pose ethical and legal implications. Hanuman kasam, a US-Chinese team of scientists has created the world’s first human-monkey embryo. The project which feels like the origin story of a Spider-Man villain, Rhesusman involved injecting human stem cells into macaque embryos to create a hybrid that could be used for experiments, or as potential organ donors. So, if inserted into a monkey uterus, theoretically, the part-human lifeform chimera, after the Greek mythological half-lion, half-goat and a snake’s head as tail will have cells from both a monkey and a human. Sounds more lik ....
Proponents say chimera experiments could lead to a new source of transplant organs. An image from a timelapse of the monkey-human chimera Cell Monkey embryos containing human cells have been developed in a laboratory, a study by a global team of researchers confirms. The development sparks new debate on the ethics of experiments on chimera embryos, whose cells come from two different species. In the new study, the researchers, led by Prof Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte from the Salk Institute in the US, detail their experiments with cells from a long-tailed macaque and a human. They reveal that the cells can survive and even multiply when matched together. ....
(Photo : Photo: Screenshot from Instagram) Genetic chimerism, also known as a chimera, is a single organism made up of cells with several genotypes. In species, this refers to an organism originating from two or more zygotes. It might include blood cells of various blood types, minor differences in structure (phenotype), and even the possession of both female and male sex organs if the zygotes were of different sexes. Ethical Discussion (Photo : Pixabay) Many scientists have expressed reservations about the procedure, claiming that although the embryos, in this case, were killed after 20 days, others might attempt to continue the research. They re asking for a general discussion on the consequences of making chimeras that are part human and part nonhuman. ....
The “What could possibly go wrong” file is so full, it may be time to give China its own manila folder for its experiments with human-animal chimeras that not only cross the ethical line – they wipe it out completely with genetically-altered erasers. The latest entry in the file is an experiment that attempts to reach the unholy grail of hybrids – human-monkey chimeras, created under the ‘good intentions’ guise of developing ways to address the severe shortage of human organs for transplants. Before you start pointing fingers at China’s Kunming University of Science and Technology, the leader of this experiment was an American from the Salk Institute in California who has also been involved in creating human-pig chimeras. Do we need to start TWO files? ....
