Stemming tide of unending spillages, degradation of oil-bearing — Saturday Magazine — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Oil spillThe thorny issue of oil spillage and the debates around it are as old as when Nigeria began crude oil exploration in the Niger Delta region. But it was the 1970 oil spill in Ogoniland, which led to a £26m fine against Shell in Nigeria that eventually put the country in the eye of the storm globally. Many judgments have since been delivered against oil companies, the Nigerian government and/or their representatives and supervising agencies for the degradation of oil-bearing communities and losses of lives and property.

Given the country’s weak regulatory oversight, as well as poor data gathering capacity, statistics of data spill is, according to many experts, inaccurate and mainly underreported. Amnesty International had reported that since 2014, Eni alone had about 820 spills in the Niger Delta accounting for about 4.1 million litres. Also, si ....

Shell divestment plans aimed at evading responsibility for cleanup, say groups | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World NewsNigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Civil society groups in Nigeria, yesterday, urged the Federal Government to compel Shell to clean up the pollution its extractive activities have created in the Niger Delta, warning that the company’s plans to move offshore was to evade the scrutiny its onshore activities have attracted.
Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) and the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) made the demand following reports that Shell was discussing with the government to sell its stake in onshore oilfields.
Chief Executive Officer of Shell, Ben van Beurden, had announced, last week, during the firm’s yearly general meeting in The Hague, Netherlands, that the company had struggled with spills in the Niger Delta over the years due to pipeline theft, sabotage and operational issues. ....

In their quest for mechanised farming and construction of highways, state governors have become the major agents of deforestation, leading to land grabs that deprive communities of their land and livelihood.
This was one of the conclusions reached at a general assembly on “Connected Resistance”, organised by the Host Communities Network, HoCoN, with support from Global Greengrants Fund, GGF, and Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, ERA/FoEN, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State.
The rights group also held that host communities bear the brunt of environmental degradation from resource extractions, while a few individuals who are supposed to represent the communities in the resource benefits sharing, live in luxury and leave the majority in poverty. ....
