Cost of building work on UK homes to rise as price of materials soars

Sat 8 May 2021 03.00 EDT UK homeowners face higher bills for renovation work as builders grapple with soaring material costs and shortages of essentials ranging from concrete and timber to taps and roof tiles in a booming housing market. “It is a bit like going to Sainsbury’s and them not having any bread, milk or eggs in,” said Paul Bence, the managing director of builders merchants Bence, of the runaway demand for supplies that is emptying shelves. “Cement is our bread and butter and we would normally keep a good 10 days stock. We would not operate a ‘just-in-time’ model … but that’s effectively where we are right now.”

Is remote working sustainable for the construction industry?

Back in the height of lockdown last year, I was asked to write an article on what the post-Covid-19 office would look like. It was a tough question to answer then, and it’s arguably even tougher to answer today. Mark Coates is director of strategic industry engagements at Bentley Systems I believed then that the office would soon become a thing of the past. Fast forward to today, I still believe that. Productivity hasn’t fallen significantly, while flexibility in our day-to-day working lives is the new trend. We’ve seen the news of big-named brands and their long-term strategy for remote working. Grant Thornton UK announced that its employees wanted to spend less than half of the working week in the office post-Covid, just one week after PwC announced that its staff would spend between two and three days a week in the office as part of a hybrid model.
