CHICAGO (WLS) Chicago Public Schools announced Tuesday that it has set a target date for high schoolers to return to in-person learning for the start of the system s fourth quarter. In a statement tonight, the Chicago Teachers Union said there is no agreement, claiming the district put out information preemptively. But the CPS parents who spoke to ABC7 hope the target date gets set in stone. This is a step forward in a big way for the city of Chicago, said Rev. David Griggs, a CPS parent. We feel like this is us getting our life back, said Willie Preston, another CPS parent. ....
CHICAGO (WLS) Thousands of 6th through 8th grade Chicago Public school students returned to the classroom Monday. This comes after kindergarten through 5th graders returned to in-person learning last Monday morning, and now CPS has its sights on getting high schoolers back, too. CPS CEO Janice Jackson, along with teachers and staff, welcomed some students back to Richardson Middle School on Chicago s Southwest Side. She said she has every confidence the district has prioritized safety for all. They did a great job. I feel 100% safe that my son is returning to school, she said. For Joseph Williams, that s not the case. We still don t feel that is it safe enough just yet to send our children back to school, he said. The father of five CPS students, ranging from kindergarten to high school, has opted to keep them all at home, wishing the return to school plan was staggered out grade by grade. I really felt that phases should have went maybe by grade levels, he said. Grade level by grade level, where you have opportunity to vaccinate teachers per grade level and take it as a slow process to working in. ....
Jackson said she hopes to have high schoolers back in classroom this spring. CPS and CTU were locked in negotiations for months over plans from kindergarten through eighth grade students to return to classrooms. The initial start date of in-person learning was pushed back when teachers refused to return to their classrooms, citing COVID safety concerns and a demand for prioritized vaccination. Students in K through fifth grade return to in-person learning on Monday, March 1. Students in grades six through eight will return to classrooms the next week. ....
