Group Wants To Thwart Construction Of Spaceport In Marquette County

MAMA The Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association wants to build a vertical launch site for rockets carrying commercial satellites in Marquette County. But a local group is protesting against those plans. Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior says its goal is to protect the lake and its coastal habitat and to defeat the proposed construction of the site near the historic Granot Loma lodge. Group President Dennis Ferraro says shockwaves and noise associated with launching rockets is bad, not only for the environment, but for the Upper Peninsula’s recreation-based economy. “These are all areas that people come to because they like the quiet, beautiful wildness of our environment here in the U.P., so it’s just a bad idea all the way around.”

Northern Michigan Airports Receive Federal Funding for Improvements

9 & 10 News April 8, 2021 Throughout the pandemic airports across the country lost revenue thanks to less travel, and the U.S. government is looking to provide assistance.  The U.S. Department of Transportation will give over $4 million to three northern Michigan airports. Cherry Capital Airport will receive $2,369,965, Pellston Regional Airports will receive $1,009,869, and Chippewa County Airport will receive $1,008,286. These funds will help them make improvements related to operations, cleaning, and fighting the spread of pathogens.   In Pellston, the airport lost revenue due to COVID, and this money will give them a helping hand. “Ok, so we weathered the storm for 2020 but what does 2021 and the future look like?” said Mike Reaves, Emmet County Administrator. “So these grants will help us planning going forward, because we’re not out of this yet and I’m still impacted by significant revenue downturns.”
