For four seasons, the TV series Search Party has used its cast of New York millennials as a microcosm of imperfect generational behavior. Its main character, Dori Sief (Alia Shawkat), is a directionless late-twentysomething whose lack of ambition or professional qualifications have kept her life in banal stasis. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Drew Gardner (John Reynolds), is a prototypical Midwestern “nice guy” whose passivity and sensitivity are mercurial and fraught. Her other two college friends Elliott Goss (John Early), a queer man-about-town, and bubbly actress Portia Davenport (Meredith Hagner) are equal parts clueless and self-involved. As Dory continues to suffer at the hands of Chip in this batch of season four episodes – “Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity-Jig,” “Doctor Mindbender,” and “The Thoughtless Woman” – her friends form a “Search Party” of their own to find her. Things start off on a lighter note, though, as “Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity-Jig” opens with Portia sporting a ridiculous brunette Annie wig on the set of “Savage: The Dory Sief Story.” There’s a lot of fun meta touches in this subplot. Busy Philipps (“Dawson’s Creek”) is so fantastic as the actress playing Portia, who thinks the key to the character is chewing gum. Portia declares it “so cool” that the production has cast an African-American actor to play Drew (I would have loved a more explicit comment about this creating a Drew/Julian amalgamation, but I guess Julian’s not really part of the narrative anymore).
