A.D. Chavez retires; Carver decides to un-retire

Rio Rancho Public Schools will have another executive director of athletics as it heads into the 2021-22 school year, now that Larry Chavez has set his sights on retiring.
His final day with the district, where he began in 1997 when Rio Rancho High School opened, is June 30.
He said, despite the disappointment and frustration of not seeing the Rams and Storm in action this school year, his decision isn’t the result of the pandemic: “This has been in the cards for a couple years now,” he said, closing a 38-year career in high school athletics. ....

Begay puts energy into creating junior tour

Notah Begay III speaks fondly about his latest project, a junior tour in New Mexico and surrounding states that will give young golfers in his home state more opportunities to compete.
There’s potential for the tour to become high profile and for junior golfers to gain exposure and national ranking points because of Begay’s name on the tour and because of the partnership with the Sun Country Junior Golf Tour, which has events in New Mexico and El Paso.
Golf changed Begay’s life and has seemed to always be there for him in the best of times and during dark days. He was recently named to the inaugural class of the Albuquerque Academy Hall of Fame, reminding many of the remarkable story of the 1990 graduate who went on to become a three-time All-American at Stanford, the Cardinal’s No. 1 golfer on its 1994 national championship team, and a four-time PGA Tour champio ....

Hundreds Gather At APS Headquarters For 'Let Us Play' Protest | 100.3 The Peak

A crowd of students, parents, and coaches gathered at APS’s headquarters Sunday where they called on school leaders to allow school sports resume.
“Man, to play with my brothers one more time would mean the world to me,” said Castle Brownell, a senior at Cibola High School.
“A lot of the people other students at APS are feeling neglected and ignored after the results of that meeting this past week,” said Connor Baca, a student from Eldorado High School.
As a result of the vote, APS student athletes will not be allowed to participate in their sport per the NMDOH s guidelines. ....

Something you don’t see every day, particularly if you live in New Mexico, is athletes receiving a Division I college scholarship offer before playing their first high school game.
Unless you are a member of the Brown family, in which case this is becoming old hat.
Incoming Cibola High freshman boys basketball player Amari Brown earlier this week received his first D-I offer, from Western Illinois of The Summit League.

Brown, 15, already is considered one of New Mexico’s best players, even if his prep career with the Cougars hasn’t officially begun. ....
