Realtor sentenced to death in businessman's murder case - Newspaper

KARACHI: A model court has awarded death sentence to a real estate agent for murdering a businessman over a personal dispute.
Sohail Abdul Salam Mughal was found guilty of shooting to death Munawwar Ali over suspicion of abducting his wife and three daughters in New Town.
The additional district and sessions’ judge, Haleem Ahmed, of the model criminal trial court (East) pronounced the judgement.
The judge also ordered the convict to pay Rs1 million in compensation to the legal heirs of the victim. On default, he would undergo imprisonment for six months.
However, the sentence is subject to confirmation or otherwise by the Sindh High Court. ....

THOSE who receive pension from the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) are wondering why the monthly amount has not been increased through the central budget for 2021–2022. The answer is that any amendments in the labour laws cannot be carried out through the Finance Act.
In this respect, a two-judge bench of the Sindh High Court had, through its judgement of Feb 26, 2011, nullified the amendments effected by the government in five labour laws through the Finance Act, 2007. According to the court, the amendments did not fall within the ambit of the money bill and therefore should have been passed by both Houses of parliament. ....

PFUJ concerned at FIA notices to Karachi-based journalists

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has shown serious concerns over issuance of notices to Karachi-based journalists, Ashfaqur Reham and Mashood Aslam, and termed it a cowered attack on the media and freedom of press.
PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary General Nasir Zaidi, in a statement, while taking acceptation to rising incidents of FIA notices to journalists, said now it was clear that the incumbent government was bent upon denying the freedom of speech and press and could not face criticism, which was a hallmark of transparency and accountability. “It is a strange situation and needs serious attention of all stakeholders and political leadership of the country,” they said. SCBA questions ignoring four senior judges for apex court

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has questioned the expected elevation of the fifth senior most justice of the Sindh High Court to the Supreme Court and has demanded that this practice must be discouraged and principle of seniority should be preferred.
Ahmed Shahzad Farooq Rana, Secretary SCBA, in a statement issued here on Friday, said that although criterion for elevation to the Supreme Court is already enshrined in Article 175-A of the Constitution and further validated by court in Re: Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan vs Federation of Pakistan (PLD 2002 SC 939) , however the way in which the elevation matters has been dealt in the past and present, has only increased the dilemma. ....
