Between 1500 and 1000 BC, a caste system was introduced in India where individuals were separated based on their class, or Varna. The aim was to simplify duties, protect the virtue of a caste, and establish order. Bollywood’s problem with the blatant appropriation and denial of caste has been going on for several decades and continues to persist in the modern era. Recently, Richa Chadha-starrer Madam Chief Minister has come under fire for the tone-deaf representation of the Dalit community in its original poster, which featured the actress with a broom in her hand and a tagline that read Untouchable, Unstoppable .
Despite the film being based on a Dalit woman who rises to be a chief minister of a major state, Dalit actors are nowhere to be found in director Subhash Kapoor s upcoming political drama, many Dalit activists point out, adding that most of the individuals involved in other leading positions of the project also don’t belong to the community. ....

The government has planned to extend the distribution of ration kits, which they are now giving retrospectively for the lockdown months when students were denied the meals.

BENGALURU: While the government is ramping up efforts to reopen schools the state from January 1, although partially, there will be no hot mid-day meal as before. Instead, students will be asked to carry their own food from home. The government has planned to extend the distribution of ration kits, which they are now giving retrospectively for the lockdown months when students were denied the meals.  ....
