OXFORD â Dog owners have new guidelines for tethering their animals. In a meeting July 13, the Oxford Board of Commissioners adopted an ordinance to protect dogs while they are restrained on a tether. It goes into effect Aug. 1. The ordinance defines tethering as âfastening a dog outdoors on a rope, chain, or other lines for restraining a dog.â It requires that a tethered dog must be provided adequate shelter, food and water as well as protection against extreme weather. The line by which the dog is tethered must be at least 10 feet long and âattached in such a manner as to prevent strangulation or other injuries to the dog and entanglement with other objects.â The line should be attached to the dog with a buckle-type collar that does not tighten on the dogâs neck once fastened, or a body harness. ....
