Varthamanam is one of the angriest films I’ve seen, and rightly so. But it’s not any ‘mass’ dialogues that do it. It does this by showing you some of the things about this country that boil your blood. Faiza Sufiya (Parvathy), a Malayali, arrives at Delhi University to enrol as a research student. Her subject is Mohammed Abdur Rahiman Sahib, a freedom fighter and journalist who may not be as familiar to the general public as Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, a scene towards the end reflects this sentiment. Varthamanam isn’t about the shocking attacks at JNU either, but it addresses every problematic issue plaguing this country by making the university a representative. ....

This year will add another feather in the cap of actor Parvathy Thiruvothu; having compiled a script during lockdown, Parvathy is now set to make her début as director. “If everything goes well, I will begin shooting towards the middle of 2021. The script is done, [pre-] production is done and things are going well,” she says, adding, “But I also have back-to-back [acting] projects, and I am balancing it.”
