Masks optional for students and staff at Collierville schools Jul 27, 2021 / 10:09 PM CDT MEMPHIS, Tenn. Parents took to the podium at a school board meeting in Collierville Tuesday night to voice their opinions on whether students and staff should be required to wear masks when classes begin next month. “I believe that masking is still important,” Cindy Murray said. “We must all be given the opportunity to choose what is best for our children,” Michelle Hoffez said. A feeling shared by most parents who attended the meeting. “Any parent who feels unsafe can put their child in the virtual academy, get a child over 12-years-old vaccinated and they can have their child wear a mask,” Arlen Duke said, “Parents who want their children to attend school unimpeded by a face covering should have that right as well.” ....

The United Way of Durham Region says this is the 14 th consecutive year of the Operation BackPack program in Durham Region. In the fight against poverty, and to mitigate its impacts, United Way says childhood and youth education preparedness is critical. “The “back to school” feeling that, for so many, can be invigorating and a time of excitement and expectation can for others be a daunting time,” says Cindy Murray, CEO of United Way of Durham Region, adding school supplies and backpacks come with a cost which for some must be weighed against food or accommodation for other expenses. ....
View Comments The city of Lafayette will hold its annual Stars and Stripes 4th of July Celebration on Sunday, July 4. This year s celebration will be presented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association. One new addition to the festivities this year will be a parade at 11 a.m., beginning at 16th and Alabama streets and continuing on to Main Street. The parade will proceed to Wallace Avenue before turning onto Park Avenue, then concluding in Columbian Park. Children are being encouraged to join in on the festivities more than ever before with the return of the box parade. Children will put on display their own walking floats made out of cardboard boxes. Prizes will be given to the top five box float entries that best portray this year s theme: Honoring Our Local Heroes. ....

(WLFI) Memorial Day less than three weeks away. The city of Lafayette is urging people to get their entry forms for the annual parade submitted by Friday, May 21. The parade route will begin on Alabama Street and continue around Columbian Park. The route ends in Columbian Park, where a Memorial Day program will be held.
