Guest columnist Cinda Jones: Recognizing obstructionism as simply a noise-maker Siblings Evan and Cinda Jones, pictured in 2016, represent the ninth generation of family management for the Cowls Companies in North Amherst. Gazette File photo Published: 4/15/2021 1:07:35 PM Our town and its citizens have limited and critical resources of time, money and people. All three of these finite resources are being misappropriated by petition authors who admit that their goal in filing a petition article for a moratorium on building was not in fact to pass a moratorium on building. I was told by an author: “Of course we know we don’t have the Town Council votes to pass a building moratorium we’re not stupid!” ....
Forest protection Published: 4/6/2021 9:47:28 AM Regarding Cinda Jones “Fact checking” My Turn, March 31: Once again we see financial motives, in this case millions of public dollars for Cinda Jones and Cowls, rebranded as “conservation.” “Anticipating these solar farms, Cowls conserved over 2,000 acres of proximate forests in advance 10 times the amount of forests that will host solar for 20-30 years.” Cowls did not “conserve” the land, the public did. By threatening development, Cowls was given $3.25 million by the public to simply continue business as usual logging of their forests. Now for some icing on the cake, Cowls again goes to the public trough for “green” energy subsidies that would make clear cutting their forest even more lucrative. It does not take a genius to realize that solar in developed and degraded locations is genuinely “green” energy, but clear cutting forests to install solar to “help” nature is as dumb as a stum ....
Cinda Jones: Fact-checking solar opportunities in Western Mass. An example of a large scale ground-mounted solar array. THOMAS PEARSON Published: 4/6/2021 2:43:46 PM Good-hearted people who want to protect trees and forests keep writing public letters opposing the Cowls family (who just protected over 5,500 acres of working forests) hosting solar farms on several interspersed 30-acre sites in Shutesbury, Pelham and Amherst. Fact checking is in order. Forested land is important. Do you know how much Shutesbury has? According to Shutesbury’s 2015 Open Space Plan, Shutesbury is 87% forested, with 81% of the town’s open space under (mostly permanent) protection and 6% of the town is devoted to residential units. ....
From left, Golden Years principals Brian Santaniello, Mary Flahive-Dickson, and Cesar Ruiz Jr. Cesar Ruiz Jr. describes the business plan for Golden Years Homecare Services as “a living, breathing document.” That intriguing phrase was chosen to convey many things all at once especially movement, flexibility, seemingly constant change, and a certain ambitious tone. Indeed, while every business plan is fluid and most are written in pencil figuratively speaking, anyway this one has been altered countless times since it was first drafted more than eight years ago, and the new lines on the page reflect why Ruiz, the company’s president, and the entire leadership team at this East Longmeadow-based venture have been named Top Entrepreneur for 2020 by BusinessWest. ....
