Budget 2021: What's on the other side of the economic boom

The stimulus-fuelled economy is poised to boom this year, propelled by strong jobs growth and consumer spending, this week’s federal budget outlines.
The Reserve Bank of Australia and market economists broadly agree on a rosy economic outlook for the next 12 months.
Indeed, the latest monthly employment report from job website Seek this week showed new job ads increased 12 per cent in April – the second consecutive record-breaking month of job ads in Seek’s 23-year history.
The “miracle” recovery will likely roll on until at least the next federal election.
Nevertheless, as stimulus eventually fades and vaccines are rolled out, far less certain is what awaits Australia on the other side of the recovery from the COVID-19 downturn. ....

Aussies react to Scott Morrison's decision to keep borders closed indefinitely amid Covid

Pictured: Results of Daily Mail s recent poll as of 3.30pm Sunday
Sixty per cent of Daily Mail Australia readers agree with Scott Morrison s decision to keep international borders closed indefinitely to stem the spread of Covid.
As the virus continues to wreak havoc in India, Europe and the United States, Australia s Prime Minister vowed to maintain his tough stance on borders on Sunday.
Mr Morrison said Australians had come to accept local lockdowns as part of living with Covid-19 and that residents do not have an appetite for change.
The PM argued reopening borders too soon would expose the country to another more ruthless outbreak of Covid-19, like those experienced in the UK, India and Europe.   ....

Australian regulator moves to block Qantas-Japan Airlines deal » Borneo Bulletin Online

May 7, 2021
SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia’s competition regulator yesterday said it would block a pricing, code-sharing and scheduling deal between Qantas and Japan Airlines because it would likely mean higher fares for passengers.
Qantas had claimed the five-year agreement – proposed in late 2020 – would speed the pandemic recovery and “better serve customers” by improving connections between 29 smaller cities in Australia, Japan and New Zealand.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in reality cooperation would cause “severe harm to competition” and “eliminate any prospect of Qantas and Japan Airlines competing for passengers”.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, Qantas and Japan Airlines had dominated the market for flights between Tokyo and Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne. ....
