Two Chisum High School art students have taken top honors at a pair of notable art competitions for young people.
Kristen Parson has been selected as the winner of Texasâ 4th Congressional District for the 2021 Artistic Discovery Competition, sponsored by members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Nicky Teichroeb recently earned a gold medal in the UILâs Visual Art Scholastic Event state level competition, one of only 12 students to advance to the state level.
Parson, 16, the daughter of Grant and Sherry Parson of Arthur City, is a junior and has been in CHSâs art program since she was a freshman. She entered this same contest that year and was awarded the Peopleâs Choice Award. Her work hung in the office of then-Rep. John Ratcliffe for a year.
The regular season wrapped up earlier this week for softball teams across the Red River Valley, and after a tremendous season, quite a few have punched their tickets for postseason play, which kicks off today.
One of the most dominant softball teams in all of Texas is the North Lamar Pantherettes, who won their fourth consecutive district championship this year, and did so without losing a single game.
Their playoff journey begins today in Quitman, as they take on Kilgore at 6 p.m..
They arenât the only Red River Valley team that blitzed through district play undefeated, however. Also similarly dominating in the regular season was the Cooper Dogettes. They are set to play a one-game playoff against a fellow Red River Valley squad, the Honey Grove Lady Warriors, today in a neutral-site one-game playoff being played at Chisum High School at 6 p.m.

Recently crowned Ms. Wheelchair Southwest USA, Felker will take a message of determination and community activism as her platform to the Ms. Wheelchair USA pageant in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where she will participate July 11-17 in a week of pageant activities for the national crown. Competition includes interviews, evening wear, a platform speech presentation, on-stage questions and platform marketing statement competition.
