The Covid-19 crisis has seen rising levels of wealth, the first time this has happened during a recession in 70 years, a new study suggests. The Resolution Foundation said its research also revealed a widening wealth gap as middle and high-wealth households have amassed savings and benefitted from rising house prices. The think tank said that despite the UK experiencing the biggest economic contraction in more than three centuries last year, levels of household wealth have increased rapidly, in contrast to the falls seen in past recessions. Total household savings are £200 billion higher than they were pre-crisis, household debts excluding credit cards have fallen by around £10 billion and house prices have risen by 8% since February 2020, said the report. ....

A LUDLOW volunteer says that she would love to have nothing to do. Ruth Davies, writes in the Hands Together Ludlow newsletter, that she wishes that the foodbank she leads could close because it was not needed but she does not see this happening. “The latest statistics show that 10 per cent of children in Ludlow are living below the poverty line, and one area is the second most deprived in Shropshire,” said Ms Davies, who works from the Rockspring Centre. “It is true that morally there should not be a need for food banks in 21st Century Britain, but when facing the need that we see on an almost daily basis, I feel compelled by the love of Christ to help people at their point of need. ....
