Man driving motorized bike killed following collision in north Redding A man riding a motorized bicycle was killed Tuesday morning after a collision involving a car on southbound Highway 273 in Redding, according to the Shasta County Coroner s Office. A woman was killed Thursday afternoon when she was struck by a locomotive as she walked along the railroad tracks in south Redding. Redding police Sgt. Mark Montgomery said the woman, who has not been identified, was walking north along the middle set of tracks in the area of Highway 273 and Girvan Road. There are three sets of tracks in that area. A Union Pacific locomotive was also traveling north on the same set of tracks as the woman who was struck, Montgomery said. The woman was hit by the engine just south of the Girvan Road crossing. The incident was reported shortly before 1 p.m. ....
A powerful painkiller up to 100 times more potent than morphine has been linked to several overdoses and four people dying this month in Northern California. Shasta County authorities believe the drug fentanyl led to the deaths of three men whose bodies were found Monday at a Redding residence. Less than two weeks earlier, a rash of overdoses and one death were reported in Lake County where a test of the capsules also pointed to the synthetic opioid. Fentanyl is legally prescribed for pain relief, often for cancer patients, but the substance is also sought by drug users on the black market. Its illegal use has been documented as part of the nationwide opioid crisis, but quantities of it are showing up in the North State and it s a rising cause of death in Shasta County. ....
