Sweltering heat couldnât dry the spirits of people celebrating the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez on Saturday at the Las Colonias Amphitheatre. Organized by the Cesar Chavez Celebration Committee, Saturdayâs event not only honored the iconic activist, but celebrated Latino heritage as a whole with Aztec dances, musical performances and speeches. Cesar Chavez Day is March 31, but the Grand Valley celebration was delayed this year because of COVID-19. âWe chose this location because it was an area where our ancestors settled and worked, and we honor Cesar Chavez to also honor those who work in the fields to put food on our tables,â said Nelly Garcia, a volunteer with the celebration committee. âHe saw that workers didnât have the rights that every human should have, and he was able to change that. Houston Residents here honored labor leader and United Farm Workers founder Cesar Chavez March 27 with a caravan through the East Side, led by over 25 motorcycles, dozens of Chicano lowrider cars and other cars with signs and union flags on them. They met up with a large contingent of marchers who had gathered on Cesar Chavez Blvd., led by children on bikes and walking with UFW flags. The Southeast Tejas Brown Berets organized the event, which ended with a rally at Magnolia Park, which was once the only park that Mexicanos could use in Houston. Historian Jesus Medel and poets Johnny Torres and Tonāntzin Rodríguez were among the speakers at the rally which was opened by a performance of Aztec dancers. ....
TODEC celebrates east valley field workers on Cesar Chavez Day Eliana Perez, Palm Springs Desert Sun The legal center and advocacy group Training Occupational Development Educating Communities (TODEC) spent Cesar Chavez Day on Wednesday celebrating in the fields, as well as doing outreach with field workers. Festivities began at a farm currently harvesting carrots in Thermal. Mariachi Supremo de Mexico performed as the workers leaned against buildings, trailers and sat in chairs, shaded by a tree just feet from the fields. Everybody wore masks and practiced social distancing. Cesar Chavez Day is a commemorative federal holiday that was established by then-President Barack Obama in 2014. It champions Chavez s fight for civil rights for the farmworker community in the 1960s and 70s. ....
