The Andrews Labor Government is launching an Australian-first trial using smart bike light technology that will assist in finding new ways to reduce road trauma in cyclists.
Cyclists are among our most vulnerable road users because they don’t have the same protection as people in vehicles and are exposed to greater risk of death or injury when the unexpected happens.
The 12-month trial will see a diverse group of 1000 Victorians given access to a See.Sense smart bike light, with the technology capturing crucial road safety insights, as well as providing safety benefits in the form of increased visibility. ....

Campaign To Get Young Drivers Into Safer Cars

A new campaign urging young drivers to buy the safest car they can afford is aiming to address an alarming proportion of deaths in older vehicles.
While the 107 lives lost on Victoria’s roads in the first half of this year is the second-lowest on record, the number of young driver deaths (18 to 25 years old) has increased in 2021, with the majority in older vehicles that don’t have key safety features.
A lack of safety technology in older vehicles not only increases the risk of being involved in a crash, but also provides less protection in the event of an incident. ....

Further Road Safety Boost For Thompsons Road

The Andrews Labor Government has delivered new flexible safety barriers, creating a more reliable journey for thousands of drivers travelling along a major road in Melbourne’s south east.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said works to install life-saving barriers along Thompson Road between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Narre Warren Road builds on improvements delivered last year through the Labor Government’s Thompsons Road Upgrade.
While roadside barriers were already in place along some road sections, new barriers have been installed on the centre median and left-hand side will provide a safer journey by reducing the risk of head-on and run-off-road crashes. ....

Road Maintenance Season Goes Above And Beyond

The Andrews Labor Government’s latest road maintenance blitz has gone above and beyond, with more roads upgraded across regional Victoria than planned, supporting local jobs.
The blitz has completed 110 per cent of its original goal to improve more than 1,800 kilometres of roads.
Crews have been working tirelessly over the warmer months to upgrade the state’s roads – delivering safer and smoother journeys for every road user after regular reviews of roads across the state for potential hazards and defects and listening to motorists’ feedback.
With more Victorians choosing to explore locally, the maintenance blitz ensures more reliable routes to some of the state’s most iconic tourist destinations like the Hepburn region, Phillip Island, coastal areas in the south west and the picturesque High Country. ....
