Celebrating the life of liberation stalwart
Chimurenga liberation struggle freedom fighter and one of the first renowned nationalists, 90-year-old Moton Malianga, died in Harare on January 15, 2021 from complications of aspiration pneumonia. A mighty hero, a steadfast strategist and key player in every twist and turn of the liberation struggle (Chimurenga) for Zimbabwe, has fallen.
 
He was declared a national hero, uncontested, and was laid to rest on January 20, 2021 at the Zimbabwe National Heroes Acre. Cde Malianga was born at Old Mutare Mission in Zimbabwe on the 8th of June 1930. He was the fifth child. ....

‘Unity essential in Covid-19 fight’

President Mnangagwa yesterday urged the nation to unite in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic to suppress the spike in deaths related to the disease.
He made the plea yesterday while presiding over the burials of the late Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba and the late Zanu PF Central Committee member Cde Moton Dizzy Paul Malianga at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
Dr Gwaradzimba succumbed to Covid-19 complications in Harare last week with the pandemic killing more than 879 people since March last year.

Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba (60) and founding nationalist and Zanu PF Central Committee member Cde Morton Dizzy Paul Malianga (91), who died last week, are likely to be buried at the National Heroes Acre on the same day.
Dr Gwaradzimba succumbed to Covid-19, while Cde Malianga (91) had been ill for some time.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Mr Aaron Nhepera, yesterday confirmed the possibility of a double burial ceremony, with arrangements now being made and recommendations given. However, no final decisions have been made yet. ....

Zimbabwean President cuts short leave as Covid-19 deaths takes toll

President Mnangagwa will cut his leave tomorrow to preside over the joint burial of national heroes Moton Malianga and Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba at the National Heroes’ Acre, showing the importance he attaches to the two for the critical roles they played before and after independence.
Acting Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Secretary Dr Jenfan Muswere confirmed last night that the President “will preside on Thursday”.
The burials have to be conducted in line with Covid-19 guidelines, so there can be no body viewing at Stodart Hall and the limited numbers at Heroes Acre will need to be masked and spread out. ....
