Living in redlined areas associated with lower lung function in those with asthma Individuals with asthma who live in redlined neighborhoods have worse lung function than those in locales that excluded Black people and benefited from decades of inequitable wealth accumulation at the expense of Black communities in the United States, according to research presented at the ATS 2021 International Conference. Alexander Schuyler, MD/PhD candidate, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Sally Wenzel, MD, director, Asthma & Environmental Lung Health Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, sought to examine the connection between residence in historically redlined communities and the impact on lung function and asthma outcomes. A new study found residents living near a US Steel plant in the Pittsburgh area experienced worse bouts of asthma and increased their use of breathing aids after a 2018 fire caused elevated air pollution in the area. The Dec. 24, 2018 fire destroyed the pollution controls at US Steel’s Clairton Coke Works. For three months, the controls were offline, resulting in large releases of sulfur dioxide, a lung irritant that Researchers asked asthma patients living near the plant whether their breathing got worse in those three months, then compared their answers to those from patients farther away. “Significantly more people answered that question, ‘Yes,’ that lived close to the Clairton Coke Works than equivalent people who lived further away,” said study co-author Jim Fabisiak, associate professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Pittsburgh. “Here you have the same period of time, you’re getting this differential respons ....

University of Pittsburgh Asthma exacerbations rose following a catastrophic Christmas Eve fire two years ago that destroyed pollution controls at the Clairton Coke Works–the largest such facility in the nation, a University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health analysis concludes. The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, was possible because of a collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Asthma and Environmental Lung Health Institute at UPMC and the Allegheny County Health Department, with funding from The Heinz Endowments. “In addition to verifying that people living within a 10-mile radius of the coke works had higher rates of asthma exacerbations and use of albuterol rescue medication than those living outside the radius, we learned that nearly half of the people with asthma closest to the fire were unaware of the pollution problem and, therefore, unable to take steps to avoid exposure,” said lead author Brandy Byr ....
