Daisy and Thistle were spotted by motorists passing through the Lake District National Park last May. The donkeys, who had severely overgrown hooves and bold patches on their coats, were walking along the side of a mountain in the Langdale area. Twelve-year-old Daisy and eleven-year-old Thistle had access to the whole of Wrynose Fell. Without intervention, the donkeys could have become stranded on the mountain’s high peaks and steep slopes. ....
Two neglected donkeys who were found just days before Christmas have been given a new lease of life thanks to one animal welfare charity. After Mary and her daughter Della were discovered at a smallholding in Carlisle, donkey welfare advisers from The Donkey Sanctuary were appalled by what they found. When visiting the site last year, staff found the pair shut in a filthy stable, covered with faeces and thick mud, with no access to the fields outside. Their hooves were painfully overgrown, and their coast were sodden and matted with their own waste. After consulting with a vet, The Donkey Sanctuary team took 17-year-old Mary and five-year-old Della into their care. ....
