Timaru District CEO holds onto role after councillors vote

The council’s people and performance committee made a recommendation to keep Carran in the job. Cr Richard Lyon was supportive of retaining Carran, moving that the recommendation be accepted. “The recommendation has been thoroughly researched and democratically approached.” Lyon said Carran had been a strength in many ways and difficult decisions had been made. “I know there have been all sorts of undercurrents, but the reality is - it’s for our organisation to grow and grow and structured for the future. Naturally we can’t please everybody but that’s life.” MYTCHALL BRANSGROVE/STUFF Timaru District Council mayor Nigel Bowen, pictured with Carran, was absent from the meeting but later gave his endorsement.

Timaru District Council approves delayed Long Term Plan

Piddington called for an explanation from Mackey for what he called the council ending up “in a mess” as it missed its statutory June 30 deadline for the adoption of the plan. Mackey said when they looked at the details in a final analysis, corporate activities as a group of activities was not in the draft. This had to be amended. Also, a cut in funding from Waka Kotaki NZ Transport Agency and the flood at the end of May complicated matters. A council staff report said addressing Audit NZ’s concerns had required considerable work restating each group of activities’ Funding Impact Statement (FIS) to reflect 90 per cent capital delivery.

Housing developer's donation helps show go on for Wroughton Carnival

A HOUSING developer building a new estate in Wroughton helped bring back a popular carnival. Bellway Homes donated £400 to the committee in charge of organising the Wroughton Carnival to help ensure it could go ahead after being cancelled last year for one of the few times in its 113-year history. Thousands turned up to enjoy the festivities, which took place at Weir Field earlier this month and featured racing ferrets, live music and a fancy dress competition. Carnival committee member Sally Parker said: “We are very grateful to Bellway for their generous donation to help us make sure the carnival could go ahead this year.
