Charlottesville Group Creates Mediator Network To De-escalate Violent Confrontations

In an effort to combat the increase of violence in their community, a group of friends in Charlottesville, Virginia, have created a network of residents who are called to talk people down from potentially fatal situations. 
The network of neighbors responds to calls from witnesses who use a designated hotline to alert the mediators, as opposed to calling law enforcement. Nicholas Feggans, one of the founding members of Sit Downs Before Shootouts, said the tool also allows a person to seek help before making a life-altering mistake.  ....

A developer is seeking approval to build 11 new units at 1000 Monticello Road in Charlottesville’s Belmont neighborhood. While the Planning Commission has yet to recommend the proposal, the project is still evolving. 
With the goal to set nine of the potential 11 new units as affordable, developer Drew Holzwarth is currently hoping to be granted a special use permit that will allow for increased density on the land parcel. He renovated the adjacent Belmont Heights apartments over the past year a process that drew contention from community members as some residents were displaced during the renovation.  ....

Charlottesville Tomorrow, in partnership with Vinegar Hill Magazine and In My Humble Opinion talk show, has received $150,000 through the Google GNI Innovation Challenge to augment the launch of the recently established Charlottesville Inclusive Media project (CIM). The CIM partnership is one of 33 media projects to receive the GNI funding out of a pool of 215 applicants. 
“The funding is an innovation challenge and we are excited that Google’s team recognized the potential of a collaboration between nonprofit public service journalism and independent for profit Black media companies to change the way African American audiences and communities are represented in local media,” said Charlottesville Tomorrow News Editor Elliott Robinson. ....

The same week that the Charlottesville City Council revisited its local ordinance aimed to curb the spread of COVID-19, Gov. Ralph Northam announced new measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. This comes as case numbers are up nation and statewide with Virginia’s own positivity rate recently at 11%. With the colder months inspiring more time inside and holidays inspiring gatherings, officials are concerned about continued COVID-19 spikes. 
The governor’s new executive order, set to take effect on Monday, includes:
a reduction of gatherings from 25 people to 10 people ....
