Hintz’s proactive approach to safety puts philosophy into action
Charlotte Hintz is a transplant from Texas who was in the oil field for 13 years and combined an expertise in human resources with a strong safety background. Whether working in oil or construction, her safety philosophy is the same: “We could put the best plan in place but if the people executing it don’t believe in it, it’s just words on a piece of paper.”
That buy-in became even more crucial as the pandemic spread to Oregon. Hintz quickly organized the effort to regularly clean locations, keep people distant from each other, install handwashing stations at jobsites, and provide PPE for all employees, visitors and subcontractors.

The Daily Journal of Commerce has announced its
Hard Hat Safety Award honorees for 2021. The following companies, organizations, project teams and individuals are being recognized for their ongoing, successful work keeping employees and the public safe.
The honorees are:
Chris McInroe, project director, Perlo Construction. He was nominated “for his instrumental role advancing the culture of safety at Perlo.”
Steve Frost, site safety, health and environmental manager, Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty Company. “Steve is not only a great safety leader but … an industry leader in addressing the suicide epidemic facing the building industry,” according to his nomination.
