There are lots of ideas being floated about what the city of Cincinnati and Hamilton County should do with the millions of dollars they are receiving through the American Rescue Plan, but one proposed by Hamilton County Treasurer Charlie Winburn deserves serious consideration. Winburn, who was appointed to finish out the last six months of former treasurer Richard Goering s term, wanted to do something impactful with the limited time he had, so he set about establishing a second-chance program to keep residents who had fallen behind on their property taxes out of foreclosure and in their homes and businesses. Across the country last year, voters voted out incumbent Republican office holders from Donald Trump on down. By voting them out, we rejected the corrupt, self-interested ways in which they governed along with their do-nothing policies. Instead of learning lessons from these losses, GOP leaders nationwide have doubled down, determined to turn the tables and teach the voters a lesson by thwarting their will on a massive scale.
In state after state, now including Ohio, Republican-led legislatures are trying to teach voters a lesson by making it harder to vote next time. Here in Hamilton County, Republican leaders have a unique way of showing their disdain for the will of the voters: by handing lucrative jobs to their cronies whom the voters of this county rejected last November.
