And its most recent report suggests it’s on track for a similar yield this year. At current prices that’s around $225 million worth each year. “Gold prices have been excellent,” said Coeur Alaska’s General Manager Mark Kiessling in Juneau in a recent interview. “They came up quite a bit in 2019 and 2020. They’ve come down a little bit and 2021. But it’s still been very promising.” The mine is on a patchwork of leased private land and Tongass National Forest in an area between Juneau and Haines east of Lynn Canal. ....
In the 1500s, a Spanish explorer named Hernando de Soto embarked on a lengthy expedition across the Southeastern United States in search of wealthy empires and precious metals, like others found in Peru with the Inca people. Instead, de Soto and his team found powerful chiefdoms of Native American peoples throughout what is now Florida and other nearby states. One such group was the Chickasaw Nation in Mississippi. According to Charlie Cobb, curator of historical archaeology with the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, de Soto wintered in the town of Chikasha and was supported with housing and food by the local people and their leader, known as Chikasha Minko. But de Soto overstayed his welcome, and near the spring of 1541, the Chickasaws attacked the Spanish, who hastily retreated and left behind many of their goods. ....
