Robert Lowell / American Journal Native was distinguished flyer The name of the late U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral John Currier, a Westbrook native, is inscribed on a statue at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., his father said Saturday during a visit to the Westbrook Historical Society. Bill Currier said his son, who died a year ago at age 68 in Michigan, was recognized as a recipient of the Harmon International Trophy in 1980. As a Coast Guard helicopter pilot and then a lieutenant junior grade, John Currier flew a night mission that rescued 10 crew members from a fishing vessel on fire in heavy seas and high winds off New Bedford, Massachusetts, his father said. ....
Many folks have speculated over what Tonto meant when said “ Kemosabe” when addressing the masked man in the Lone Ranger comic books and on radio and television. Some are not printable. One version says it’s a Yavapai Indian word Kinasabeh or Kimmaseba which means “One who is white.” The answer lies with Jim Jewell, who directed “The Lone Ranger” until 1938. Jewell said he’d lifted the term from the name of a boys’ camp at Mullet Lake just south of Mackinac, Michigan called Kamp Kee-Mo Sah-Bee. The camp had been established in 1911 by Jewell’s father-in-law, Charles Yeager, and operated until about 1940. Translation of kee-mo sah-bee, according to Jewell was “trusty scout.” ....

As a child on the family farm in South Dakota, Mom cultivated a love for the prairie, its plants and wildlife. It was also during those early years on the farm where she began her life-long love for cats. Mom told us many stories about the barn kitties and would fondly remember those kittens’ names decades later.
