Jazz great Duke Ellington is said to have directly fired only one person in his career. That was bassist Charles Mingus in the early 1950s. Mingus was an ensemble player and fan of Ellington’s music. But even after being kicked to the curb by his idol, he reimagined jazz with complex and wild compositions.
Now Mingus is considered one of the most explosive jazz virtuosos of our era. Some of his music was released for the first time this month. It’s a live album of a 1974 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. Mingus only ever released half of the show on record. Now the elusive full performance is out on Atlantic Records. ....

Full version of Mingus at Carnegie Hall issued for the first time

By Adam Feibel
Mingus at Carnegie Hall has finally been made available for the first time.
Recorded on Jan. 19, 1974,
Mingus at Carnegie Hall was originally released as a single LP with only two long jam sessions of
C Jam Blues and
Perdido. But the concert actually included two hours of performances, which meant that more than 70 minutes of music were left on the cutting room floor.
Almost 50 years later, the album was recently reissued in full in celebration of this year’s Black Music Month. The deluxe edition of
Live at Carnegie Hall restores all of that previously unreleased material in its correct sequence, putting fans right in the middle of that moment in 1974. ....

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The woman dancing down the aisle Saturday at Saratoga Performing Arts Center danced what everybody felt as the Hot Club of Saratoga, first act playing Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz Festival, lit up “Swing 42.”

Musically, the festival looked back. The Hot Club celebrated 1930s fleet “gypsy jazz” of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Joey Alexander explored the piano’s every dialect, eloquent ala McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. Dianne Reeves sang and skated Brazilian-style: Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto. And Christian McBride’s New Jawn hard-bopped like the Jazz Messengers, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis. ....
