The Makings of Modernity
When Alexander Calder (1898-1976) moved back from France to his native US in 1933, his vision coloured by the post-Cubist and De Stijl iconography he witnessed in Paris, it was just in time to cement a relationship with a newly formed gallery in Manhattan. The Museum of Modern Art had opened its doors in November 1929, initially occupying the upper stories of an office building on Fifth Avenue â it would shift locations several more times before 1939, when its famous Goodwin and Stone headquarters was completed. In its inaugural year, the gallery displayed a combination of work by modern European masters and the new Precisionist-era American painters, from Charles Demuth to Georgia OâKeeffe. Calder, who had taken inspiration from Piet Mondrian and Joan MirÃ³, seemed to synthesise the styles and schools the new museum wanted to champion. ....

.- The Arthur G. Dove Catalogue Raisonné Project today announced the publication of a complete and authoritative catalogue raisonné of the pioneering modernists work. Edited and written by scholar and curator Debra Bricker Balken, Arthur Dove: A Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings and Things sheds expansive new light on the artists work with an illustrated survey of the full corpus of his known paintings and assemblages (or things), along with a wealth of essays that draw on previously unpublished materials. .- Things Left Unsaid, a digital exhibition and collaboration between the Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design features the work of the Fine Art Department seniors in a virtual exhibition. Artists include Rachel Boldt, Sharnee Burnett, Karissa Deiter, Meranda Hall, Paige Hershey, Brittany Lare, Sarah Lennon, Danielle Parker, Spencer Robbins, and Mab Ulrich-Neureuter. The exhibit will be on view online from December 11, 2020, through January 10, 2021, here.
This group exhibition juxtaposes a diverse array of mediums and narratives. All the highlighted artists bring their own perspective of artmaking to our shared environment.
