Camp-Bennett beat her own personal-best time by about a half-second, clocking a winning time of 4 minutes, 8.53 seconds Saturday to win the 1,500-meter national championship Saturday at the NCAA women s outdoor track and field championships at Eugene, Oregon.
The Cougars qualified 24 bids from an NCAA-high 69 entries at the west preliminary round, held at E.B. Cushing Stadium. Qualifying bids include 14 from the men s team and 10 from the women s team, as well as decathlete Dallin Vorkink, who did not have to compete in the regional round after previously qualifying in the top-24 for multi-event athletes by the end of the regular season.
Among the highlights were Conner Mantz, the Sky View High product who will try to become the second consecutive Cougar to win the 10,000-meter national title after Clayton Young won the most recent title in 2019 a win that paced BYU to an eighth-place team finish.

(15-Mar) At today’s pandemic-delayed NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the women of Brigham Young and the men of Northern Arizona were decisive winners in the team competition with 96 and 60 points, respectively, while the individual titles went to Mercy Chelangat of Alabama and Connor Mantz of Brigham Young. These championships –held in warm, sunny and windy weather just two days after the completion of the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas– were originally scheduled for November 21, 2020, and had never before been held in the winter. A total of 253 women and 237 men finished today’s races.
