April 23, 2021 : By Jacob Couch - Office of Communications & Public Engagement A combined 59 total faculty from different departments volunteered to serve as the week’s judges. Following a successful research week last spring, despite all presentations given virtually due to COVID-19, this year’s in-person event at the library proved to be the largest Research Week since its inception in 2017, with 263 presentations. “Research Week serves to provide all our students whether residential, online, graduate, or undergraduate an opportunity to showcase all the hard work they have put into their research, scholarship, and creative works,” Associate Director for the Center for Research & Scholarship Darren Wu said. “It is an opportunity for them to develop soft skills such as demonstrating their work ethic, critical thinking, meeting deadlines, performing under stress, and communication in a low-stakes environment.” ....
Cam went to The Island Free School then Peter Symonds College in WInchester. He has now won a place to study music at the prestigious conservatoire. Saxophonist Cam has been offered a place at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He said: “The interview process was quite strange this year having everything over Zoom and phone calls, but the staff at Guildhall were amazing and made it feel almost normal.” Due to the restrictions of the pandemic, students had to audition for conservatoire places by video recording, with very little prior notice. Cam auditioned with a backing band of teachers. ....

The revelation this month by the i Paper that Pontins drew up a list of surnames designed to keep Irish Travellers out has been described as a “Me Too” moment by campaigners. They say it is just the tip of the iceberg of the racism faced by the community and expect more whistleblowers to come forward. Debby Kennett, CEO of London Gypsies and Travellers, said: “This has been an important “Me Too” moment for the Traveller community. The exposure of Pontins’ blacklisting of Irish Travellers has resonated hugely with many people’s experiences of discrimination. It has made plain the racism that Gypsies and Travellers routinely face, but which has become so normalised that it is barely remarked on.” ....
