ROBYN TANNEHILL: Oxford building first-class Animal Resource Center

The city of Oxford is excited to announce the establishment of the Oxford Animal Resource Center. My administration and the Board of Aldermen are committed to creating a first-class Animal Resource Center. The mission of the center will be to decrease the number of pets entering the facility by helping them stay in their homes. This center will work to find better alternatives to intake, with our ultimate goal of not utilizing euthanasia as population control.
In 2011, the city built the building that has housed the animal shelter facilities. The city knew in 2011, and still strongly believes, that it is clear that our community wants, values and needs an animal shelter. The cityâs only obligation is animal control â not animal sheltering. However, in a compassionate community such as ours, we want options for our homeless animals. ....

When Oakland County’s new animal shelter opened in 2017, officials said it was an old concept that learned new tricks.
Calling it state of the art, they said the $15.5-million building would fix all of the old shelter s short-comings. Former county executive L. Brooks Patterson said it would make Oakland County a leader in animal sheltering and adoption.
Yet, critics soon began finding fault with the new shelter and its adoption program. On Wednesday, a nationally prominent expert on animal shelters deflected much of the criticism after conducting a detailed assessment of the the shelter, which sits in the middle of Michigan s most affluent county. ....

FORT WALTON BEACH The Panhandle Animal Welfare Society no longer is going to serve as a convenient depository for unwanted pets.
As one of a host of changes being made to how Okaloosa County s animal shelter will function going forward, owners attempting to surrender a pet could get turned away.
Now, instead of saying Yes, we ll take it, come on in, the policy is What can we do to help you keep the animal? said PAWS Executive Director Tracey Williams.
