A GREEN councillor claimed £13.84 in cycle mileage to get to meetings. Councillor and keen cyclist Pete West spearheaded the roll out of new lanes across Brighton and Hove last year. His expenses claim was revealed in newly released data for the financial year ending April 2021. According to the council s website, staff can claim 20 pence per mile in cycle mileage. This would mean Cllr West cycled just shy of 70 miles - burning an estimated 3,360 calories. Unlike most other councillors, Cllr West did not claim a bus pass or a subsidised car parking space. The expenses data shows fellow Green councillor Sarah Nield made the highest travel and sustenance claim. ....

The news came as the city’s director of public health Alistair Hill said the number of cases, dated from a positive test, is coming down across the city. But the lag from cases to deaths means it will still be some time before they also start to fall. They asked Brighton and Hove City Council chief executive Geoff Raw to write to Health Secretary Matt Hancock to ask for funding for the council’s public health team. Green councillor Sue Shanks drew on her own experience of measles as a child in the early 1960s before children were given measles jabs to protect them. She told a virtual meeting of the full council on Friday that she could remember lying in a dark room when she had the disease, which left her needing glasses. ....
