In a normal year, celebrating Shavuot meant gathering with fellow Jews to study Torah late into the night, maybe with some singing and late-night snacks.
This year, several of Greater Phoenixâs Reform and Conservative synagogues will still gather to study and connect â but on Zoom.
âIsnât that just what everyone wants? All I want is just to spend more time on Zoom,â Congregation Beth Israel Associate Rabbi Sara Mason-Barkin quipped, referencing the Zoom fatigue that has become a hallmark of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jewish community 'on the ground' with humanitarian support for asylum seekers | Community

As the number of asylum seekers at Arizonaâs southern border increases, so too does the number of buses dropping off migrants at International Rescue Committee community shelters in Phoenix.
Every day this year, between 75 and 150 asylum seekers have arrived in the Phoenix area, according to Stanford Prescott, community engagement coordinator for IRC in Arizona.
These arrivals have already gone through some initial processing with federal immigration officials and have been granted the opportunity to have their case heard before a judge. But they are on their own while they wait.
Often, they donât even know where they are when they get off the bus, Prescott said, and must find a way to travel to friends or family while they await a court hearing. ....

After her brother unexpectedly died at age 56 in September 2019, Helene Harty Miracle struggled to deal with her grief. She quickly had to shift gears to take over his business responsibilities and meet the needs of his employees. At the same time, the single mom was also about to become an empty nester â her daughter was heading out of state for college.
âMy life was going to be extremely different,â she said. âI knew I needed support.â
