Ames Tribune Applause erupted at the City of Ames low head dam celebration Saturday morning as a kayaker paddled by using the now-safe passage downstream. About 80 people congregated at the North River Valley Dam at 10 a.m. where community leaders cut a ribbon signaling the completion of the low head dam modification which will allow safe passage for paddlers and fish alike. Saturday was one of the first community events of the year as the weather warms up. Iowa River Revival took advantage of the event to officially award Ames River Town of the year. Ames is the 15th town to receive the award. ....

These creatures perished in waves of extinction as oxygen levels in the water oscillated and the downward swings repeatedly suffocated the seas. It was the most devastating period of the Late Devonian Mass Extinction one of the five largest extinctions to ever plague the planet. But what triggered these pulses of death has remained a hotly debated topic. Now, scientists believe that the earth s orbital cycles and the emergence of the first forests may have converged to produce this fatal rhythm. ....
Arts Academy students receive an unprecedented 358 awards in the 2021 regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Arts Academy students receive an unprecedented 358 awards in the 2021 regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Students from all seven Interlochen Arts Academy majors netted 358 awards in the 2021 West Michigan division of the regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Creative Writing students received a total of 191 awards, including 49 Gold Keys, 95 Silver Keys, and 47 Honorable Mentions. Four creative writing students Sara Carmichael, Ella Harrington, Bianca Layog, and Maia Siegel also won all five of the region’s American Voices nominations, with Layog receiving two nominations. Several students from other Academy divisions also received accolades in the regional writing competition. Pianist Miles Zaud earned a Gold Key for his flash fiction piece, “Lost in Work.” Theatre student Mia Yiannias, pianist Elaine See Toh, singer-songwriter Ava Goldfar ....
