Home and Away with the Legal Services Consumer Panel

2021-05-12T11:08:00+01:00
Regulatory bodies love a bit of corporate lingo, and it appears the limitations of a pandemic are not going to stop them indulging.
So it was that the Legal Services Consumer Panel embarked on what it called its ‘strategy away day’, which consisted of exactly the type of virtual meetings we’ve grown accustomed to over the last year. It would appear the nearest any contributor got to going away was a trip to the kitchen to make a brew.
Still, the show must go on – and what a show it was, described by the panel chair Sarah Chambers as ‘possibly one of the liveliest in recent years’. One can only imagine how lifeless the others must have been. ....

When other students asked why Evans’ tree was so short, their teacher didn’t want to talk about slavery, how it tore apart black families in the United States, and Evans isn’t sure it would have been the right setting for the conversation anyway. More than 30 years later, she remembers the feeling of embarrassment, of lacking something. ....

Los Angeles teachers warned not to post vacation photos while resisting in-person learning: report

The warning on the Facebook page, which has 5,600 followers, came days after the union announced that 91% of its ballot-casting members voted March 1-5 against returning for in-person instruction over novel coronavirus concerns.
The vote came in favor of resisting a “premature and unsafe physical return to school sites” until “safety conditions are in place,” including daily cleaning and improved ventilation; staff are fully vaccinated or have access to full vaccinations, and Los Angeles County “is out of the purple tier,” the most restrictive level.
“This vote signals that in these most trying times, our members will not accept a rushed return that would endanger the safety of educators, students, and families,” UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in a Friday statement. ....
