In early November 1921, during the course of a meeting of the Board of Guardians, in Trim, County Meath, Councillor John King read aloud the contents of a letter written by an unfortunate woman (unnamed) who had ended up in the Trim Workhouse. She implored board members to consider doing two things this winter: to provide the women of the workhouse with warm shawls, and to ensure that the cold milk, served twice a week with their ‘dinner’ (bread only), was heated. Concluding her letter with a line from a beautiful song, she said that if these requirements were not met, ‘we never will be able to plough the Rocks of Bawn’. ....
PLANS to build an indoor velodrome for cyclists in the West Midlands as a legacy of the Commonwealth Games have received the backing of the region s mayor. Dave Viner from Halesowen Athletic & Cycling Club, based at Manor Abbey Stadium in Halesowen, has spearheaded the campaign since it was confirmed the Games would be held in Birmingham 2022. Charlie Dickens from Stourbridge, a big fan of the sport, has also been playing a key role in the campaign and has been managing a petition calling for an indoor track to be built in the region which has now attracted 8,164 signatures. And on Sunday (April 18) - West Midlands Mayor Andy Street stopped off at Manor Abbey Stadium and confirmed he has committed to backing the campaign in his manifesto. ....

Known as one of the progenitors of funk, The Meters became the house band for Allen Toussaint’s recording label, backing recordings by Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, Earl King, Robert Palmer and Patty Labelle’s No. 1 hit Lady Marmalade. They toured with the Rolling Stones and influenced a variety of artists including Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys. Porter’s rhythmic work with drummer Modeliste also came to be used as building blocks for hip-hop artists A Tribe Called Quest, Run-DMC, N.W.A. and Queen Latifah, all of whom sampled The Meters. ....
