Christian Antonio, a seventh-grader at Santa Sophia Academy in Spring Valley, claimed the champion title in the 51st annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee Wednesday. He won the event after 13 rounds, triumphing with the correct spelling of the word huipil a traditional Oaxacan garment. “I want to say thank you,” he said, as his parents joined him onscreen after the competition. “And I want to thank my family for supporting me, and my school, Santa Sophia. I’m glad my hard work paid off. Sindura Sridhar of Wilson Southern Middle School is the champion of the Diamond City Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by Diamond City Sports. Khalid Tounsi from Exeter Township Middle School finished second. Veeren Sheka from Nazareth Area Middle School placed third. The competition involving 24 spellers from 24 local schools lasted 16 rounds.
