For many international students pursuing their studies at UC Berkeley across vastly different time zones, the pandemic has been a time marked by isolation, exhaustion and mental fatigue. Although some professors have adopted accommodations, there remains to be change on a campuswide scale, resulting in calls from students and organizations representing the international community for greater flexibility in instruction. Following the death of Kaijie Zhang, an international freshman who attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, earlier this year, the ASUC has raised further concerns regarding synchronous online instruction. Zhang was taking courses synchronously from his family home in China and died after bouts of irregular sleep, according to a statement made by ASUC Senators Rex Zhang, Samuel Peng and Will Liu, who each represent the international student community. ....

Anti-Asian hate crimes have risen significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with reporting database Stop AAPI Hate receiving almost 3,000 accounts of hate crimes since spring 2020. Although roughly one in four Bay Area residents is Asian, according to Bay Area Census data, this region is not an exception to the national trend. There have been multiple documented instances of violent anti-Asian sentiment and attacks in the past few months, with some directed at those of Asian descent over the age of 60. In response to the issue, UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ sent out a campuswide email Tuesday in support of the Asian community, expressing sympathy and solidarity with those who are affected by this violence. In the email, Christ provided resources for those in need, which included websites for reporting incidents, campus counseling and campus affinity groups. ....

Co-sponsor blames Trump for outbreak of xenophobia The University of California Berkeley’s student senate recently passed a resolution calling for mandated xenophobia training for all new students through the school’s New Student Services department. Samuel Peng, a member of the Associated Students of the University of California and the primary sponsor of the resolution, along with six other co-sponsors, led the passage on December 2 of a resolution titled “In Support of the Incorporation of Xenophobia Prevention Trainings in the New Student Services Programs.” The sponsors cited coronavirus-inspired discrimination as justification for their resolution. The legislation claimed there have been “various xenophobic incidents” that occurred at the public university since January 2020, but only cited to specific examples. ....
