On the surface, it may be an Assembly election sans issues in the Cauvery delta region. Declaration of the delta region as a Protected Special Agriculture Zone (PSAZ) and the waiving of cooperative farm loans to the tune of ₹12,000 crore seem to have resolved long-pending issues of the farmers. But the simmering discontent over a “lack of progress” and the favouring of one section could play a role in the election.
“Even though the State government has created the Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Authority, not a single meeting has been held so far, though it should meet at least twice a year,” said V. Sethuraman, a farmer from Mannargudi.

Farmer staged protests in different parts of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukkotai and Thanjavur districts on Saturday.
A group of farmers led by P.Ayyakannu, president of Desiya Thennindiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, blocked the traffic at Salai Road-Sastri Road junction here. Some of them carried ploughs. They raised slogans against the Centre. The police detained 54 persons. The protest disrupted the traffic for about 45 minutes.
Twenty farmers were taken into custody when they staged a road roko at Manaparai. V. Chidambaram, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, led the protest. Terming the farm laws anti-farmers, they urged the Centre to withdraw them immediately.

The farming community in the State is a disappointed lot as the Union Budget has failed to address their issues. Most of them expected a one-time farm loan waiver following the Covid and related lockdowns. Sami Natarajan, state secretary of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association said, “There were no effective steps announced for fixing remunerative prices for agriculture produce, and no major irrigation schemes to convert rain-fed farm lands into irrigated ones.” Natarajan said that over 55 per cent of the total farm land is rain-fed.
