The discovery of tens of thousands of underwater barrels containing what scientists believe to be chemical waste has raised alarm and reopened scrutiny into a history of toxic dumping that persisted off the California coast into the 1970s.
A team of scientists announced this week that they had found more than 25,000 containers, many of which they believe to be DDT waste, which has been linked to cancer and disease in humans and mass die off events in the natural world. The barrels cover a seafloor area double the size of Manhattan off the coast of the Santa Catalina Island, near Los Angeles. ....

Lately, meteorological analogies have been applied to characterisations of the international container shipping arena. Hence, the title: “Weathering the Supply Chain Storm” for a late April webinar produced by Project44, a provider of shipment visibility solutions.
Against a backdrop, as noted by Project44, of “port congestion, disruption, and a resurging global economy”, the online session included a timely look at the current state of container transportation.
It was moderated by Project44’s Nick Ruggiero, with participants Gene Seroka, Executive Director at the Port of Los Angeles, who also serves as Chief Logistics Officer for the city of Los Angeles, Edward Aldridge,  who heads up Ocean Freight at mega-forwarder Agility, and Robin Jaacks, also from Project44. ....

LA Mayor's Job Creation Claim Raises Questions

LA Mayor’s Job Creation Claim Raises Questions
Commentary
About a week ago, on April 21, the Los Angeles mayor released his $11.23 billion budget proposal for the 2021–22 fiscal year.
The night before, Mayor Eric Garcetti gave his State of the City speech, offering some rationale for his budget. He called it “a financial document … but also a roadmap,” providing a vision of the city’s future.
Within that vision, he made the claim that the capital improvement projects at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the Port of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power combined with the proposals he was making for the city-run budget “are creating more than a million new jobs for our city.” ....
