Church welcomes study on discovered bones, artifacts

THE administrators of the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish in Barangay San Nicolas, Cebu City welcomes further archaeological studies after artifacts like coral stones and what is believed to be human bones were discovered in a construction site inside the Parish compound last week.
Monsignor Roger Fuentes, parish priest of the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish, said the bones (believed to be remains of at least three dead persons) and artifacts (believed to be remnants of the old parish before it was bombed during the World War II) were discovered by construction workers in the site where a two-storey Center for the Poor building is being constructed. ....

ADMINISTRATORS of the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish in Barangay San Nicolas, Cebu City said they welcome further archaeological studies after human bones and artifacts were discovered in a construction site inside the parish compound last week.
Construction workers found them on the left side facing the church’s altar on Friday, May 7, 2021.
According to foreman Gerry Paragoso, almost all the areas they dug up contained bones.
Parish priest Msgr. Roger Fuentes said they’ve already coordinated with the Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Archdiocese of Cebu and the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission of Cebu City, which visited the site and examined the bones and artifacts. ....

EVEN before the pandemic, Archbishop Romulo Valles used to be a staple presence in regular masses in San Pedro Cathedral or even masses held to commemorate a historic happening in the city such as the Roxas Night Market bombing. Catholic faithfuls may also remember seeing him passing through Rizal Park compound on his way to the San Pedro Cathedral. Others would approach him to “mano” and have a brief chitchat.
It saddened many people who know him when in the middle of last year he was reported to have a stroke. Fortunately, he eventually recovered and has been back to service as the Archbishop of Davao and the president of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) until the present. ....

That’s the extraordinary Belen that’s the center of the Christmas celebration  of the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish in Mariveles, Bataan.

The concept of a Belen with the manger holding the Baby Jesus patterned after the ‘pugon’ of a bakery came from Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos.
Santos, the acting parish priest, said the inspiration came from the patron saint of the parish and from the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
“Bethlehem means house of bread. Saint Nicholas is also known for bread. He was healed from a deadly sickness when our Blessed Mother appeared to him and instructed him to eat the bread which she gave,” he said. ....
