Dumka: Members of the legal fraternity in the state, especially in the Santhal Pargana, have welcomed the decision of chief minister Hemant Soren to set up a bench of the Jharkhand high court in Dumka. “We are glad to learn that the chief minister has approved the proposal for setting up a high court bench in Dumka, directing the building construction department to identify a plot for the same. The fact, however, is that around 13 to 15 acres of land have already been acquired by the district administration about a decade ago,” Jharkhand Bar Council advocate Gopeshwar Prasad Jha told TOI. Jha had recently submitted a memorandum to Soren in connection to the demand for a separate bench. ....
Dumka: Traders and industrialists have advocated for amendments to the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act (SPT Act) to ensure overall development of the tribal heartland. On Sunday, the Santhal Paragana unit of the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) conducted a meeting in Deoghar where all the attendees batted for amendments to the act. “Unless the SPT Act is amended, industrial growth is not possible in Santhal Pargana,” Alok Mallik, vice president of the FJCCI Santhal Pargana regional committee, said. FJCCI president Pravin Jain, who also attended the meeting, said that development in Santhal Pargana – which covers six districts is only possible with trade and industrialization. “The proposed international airport in Deoghar, which will start operating soon, will result in considerable rise in business activities not only in Santhal Pargana but also in its adjoining parts. The Opposition BJP in Jharkhand has raked up an old case against chief minister Hemant Soren, wherein an aspiring model accused him of rape in 2013 and later withdrew her charges, with senior leader Babulal Marandi calling for a CBI investigation and asking Hemant Soren to step down till the probe was completed. The case Marandi was referring to is now at the centre of a Rs 100 crore defamation suit filed by the chief minister against BJP’s Nishikant Dubey who first spoke about it in a tweet in July this year. Dubey, an MP, announced on twitter that he had written to the Union home ministry and the Maharashtra government demanding reopening of the case against Hemant, alleging that the JMM leader had used his influence to settle the case. In response, Hemant filed a defamation suit against the MP in a Ranchi court on August 4. ....
