Library of Congress honors Iowa Library for the Blind, Print Disabled

Sandi Ryan, 69, is a lifelong reader. She reads mysteries, non-fiction biographies, political histories and, on the days she volunteers to proofread Braille translations at the Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, she reads a bit of everything.
Ryan, whose eyes were removed to treat a rare early childhood cancer called retinoblastoma, has been a patron of the library for nearly 60 years. When she was 10, her mom discovered the library’s services and they regularly ordered audiobooks, or talking books, which came on vinyl records they played in their Nevada, Iowa, home every weekend.
Ryan, who now lives in Ames, sometimes wishes she was 10 again because the library’s youth services have expanded so far beyond what she had access to as a kid. Today, its instructional materials center helps more than 100 Iowa students who are blind, have low-vision or a reading disability to access their schoolwork. It s also in the process of building a new area for children ....

A Fairbanks teacher is placed on leave after her comments on race and police shootings land on YouTube

A Lathrop High School teacher was recorded during an online class last week while offering a candid opinion about high profile police shootings, including the murder of George Floyd by a policeman, and telling students that it would be better to comply with law enforcement officers than to run or fight.
The teacher said that police departments need to do a better job of weeding out bad officers. She told students that some perpetrators of violence are non-white. She called people who wear their pants down around their knees thugs.
On YouTube, the video titled “Fairbanks Teacher — racist comments and interactions with students, staff, and family member” had more than 4,000 views as of Monday. ....

Teachers, Staff & Principals' Associations Question School Reopening

Credit Fairbanks Education Association
The associations that represent Fairbanks-area teachers, principals and support staff released a statement Friday opposing the opening of schools in January.
The Board of Education for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District voted a week ago to give students the option to return to
in-person learning for the second semester. The board’s plan
does not require schools to absolutely follow the CDC’s COVID-19 or the state of Alaska’s Smart Start guidelines for masking, social distancing and hygiene  the plan only “acknowledges” that schools will meet those guidelines “to the best of their abilities.” ....

Full opening of Fairbanks schools on Jan. 19 to be considered

Several school board members pressed for expanding school building access as education leaders met virtually Tuesday to discuss plans for 2021.
Under one scenario, schools would open to in-person classes to all who wish to attend five days a week starting Jan. 19.
“Open the doggone schools,” school board member Matthew Sampson said. “Let the kids in and staff return who so choose to do so.”
A special meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday for a school board vote.
Other plans expanding school access involve inviting limited numbers of students two to four days a week for a shorter school day with computers continuing as the primary learning platform. Yet another proposal would give principals leeway to decide how best to expand access at their buildings. The school district has about 35 schools. ....
