NEWPORT, R.I. – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Safety Branch has won the fiscal year 2020 Chief of Naval Operations Award for Safety Ashore in the large, non-industrial category. These awards recognize outstanding support and achievement in safety and occupational health.
The Safety Branch was recognized for the overall quality of the many innovative programs they manage, including compliance to safety and health standards and hands-on mishap prevention efforts.
In 2020, Safety Branch staff increased hazard abatement efforts and implemented practices to help employees achieve the highest level of compliance and maintain a healthy, safe work environment. Through a proactive, comprehensive safety program, Division Newport holds an outstanding record of achievement, due in great part to the diligence taken by the Safety Branch. ....

NEWPORT, R.I., – Kerri Spero of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Graphics and Digital Imaging Branch of the Corporate Operations Department has won first place in the Russell Egnor Navy Media Awards Graphic Design-Digital Art category.
This highly competitive, Navy-wide awards program recognizes exceptional work by individuals and communications teams throughout the Navy, and fosters an environment of innovation and growth that leads to more effective communication programs. This is the second consecutive year in which Spero, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has won in this awards program.
The winning nomination package included a series of four calendar illustrations designed to celebrate women in STEM careers, and depicted in each illustration is a building located on the NUWC Division Newport campus. ....

NEWPORT, R.I., – When the coronavirus pandemic pushed much of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport workforce into telework status for an extended period last year, connectivity became vital. It was also challenging, with so many people dispersed like confetti across the region and country.
So to stay connected with co-workers, Cassandra Tompkins, a scientist in Division Newport’s Undersea Warfare Combat Systems Department, created a daily “Story Circle” series on an internal social media network. The series started as a casual way to communicate during a difficult time, but later transformed into a valuable method of engaging in meaningful conversation with her colleagues. ....

DVIDS - News - NavalX rotational assignment offers NUWC Division Newport engineer new perspective

NEWPORT, R.I. – Innovation and forward thinking have always been a part of the way Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport engineer Chris Capuano operates. Recently, he has gotten to see how those concepts work from a slightly different perspective.
Since August 2020, Capuano, an employee in Division Newport’s Sensors and Sonar Systems Department, has been on a one-year rotational assignment with NavalX, the Department of Navy (DON) workforce super-connector that is focused on scaling non-traditional agility methods across the DON workforce.
“It’s always good to have new experiences and get new perspectives, especially in an organization as large as the Navy,” Capuano said. “At NUWC, you get exposed to one slice of the pie. NUWC was my first job out of college and, being there for five years, I got comfortable with the way things are done and the workforce culture. ....
