Volusia Realtors cheer $300,000 homes; workers, not so much

A little more than a week ago came news that the median home price in the Daytona Beach area surpassed $300,000 for the first time ever.
It s amazing, said John Adams, president of Adams Cameron & Co. Realtors. The real estate market is through the roof, no question about it.
Realtors are understandably happy about the higher prices. But for average workers in Volusia and Flagler counties, the American dream of home ownership is ever more out of reach.
Business Editor Clayton Park s story about the climbing prices for homes explained the conditions that are leading to the boom. Namely, a lot of people with money to spend are moving to Volusia and Flagler counties, many of them retirees from up north seeking their slice of Florida paradise. Low interest rates are also fueling the boom. And although interest rates will likely go up by the end of this year, no one expects the higher rates to greatly slow real estate sales here. ....

Florida Lawmakers Gut Affordable Housing Fund

Residents from Florida’s most vulnerable populations rely on affordable housing programs to buy a home, pay rent, and afford costly home repairs and construction.
But those programs are now threatened by state lawmakers who have pushed to permanently cut a significant chunk of money for the state’s affordable housing fund. Those dollars come from documentary stamp revenues.
The legislation titled SB 2512, which reduces the percentage for the pot of money that goes into affordable housing, is headed to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ desk for his consideration.
The governor in January had recommended $423.3 million for such housing programs. But the legislation approved Thursday would be far lower than DeSantis’ proposal. ....

ORLANDO, Fla. The Florida House voted 78-38 Thursday to pass SB 2512, a revised version of a House bill that would permanently redirect part of the state’s Sadowski trust funds away from their original purpose: funding affordable housing programs.
