May 6, 2021: In March 2021 Indonesia put into service the KRI Alugoro, the first submarine built in Indonesia. This was also a first for Southeast Asia, where Indonesia has been developing and expanding its ability to build warshipsfor over a decade. The Alugoro was built with the assistance of South Korea, which delivered to two similar subs with the understanding that the third was built in Indonesia, a process that included the transfer of submarine construction technology and training Indonesian shipyard staff. This co-production deal with South Korea was first proposed 18 years ago. There were extended negotiations, lots of delays, agreement on design and cost (about $335 million each) and construction of the Alugoro began in 2016.The two subs built in South Korea entered service in 2017 and 2018. The Indonesian subs are called the Nagapasa class after the name of the first one. Indonesia ordered three more of these boats in 2019, ....
South Korea Delivers 1,400-ton Submarine to Indonesia Our Bureau 1631 South Korea handed over Alugoro, a 1,400-ton submarine, to the Indonesian Navy today. The 61-meter Chang Bogo-class submarine was the third unit South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. delivered to Indonesia under a 1.3 trillion-won ($1.15 billion) contract in 2011 to export three submarines. The first two submarines were delivered in 2017 and 2018. They are equipped with torpedoes and guided missiles. The submarines are described to be Korea s original model, bigger and more advanced than Indonesia s refurbished Type 209/1300. The Type 209 is a class of diesel-electric attack submarine developed exclusively for export by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft of Germany. The original variant (Type 209/1100) was designed in the late 1960s. ....
